Position Overview

Ledgent Finance & Accounting's client is seeking a highly skilled Controller to join their established privately owned retail company with corporate offices in North Scottsdale and 20+ locations across the state. This position is crucial for both executing key accounting functions and supervising the accounting staff in a hands-on, highly engaged capacity. The role involves a combination of technical accounting work with leadership responsibilities to ensure accurate financial operations, strong team performance, and effective coordination with internal departments and external service providers. This role requires 100% in-office presence in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Management

• Supervise and manage accounting staff, including coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
• Address performance concerns in a positive, constructive manner.
• Enforce company policies and determine appropriate disciplinary actions when necessary.
• Ensure a collaborative, productive, and accountable team environment.

Hands-On Accounting Work

• Responsible for Corporate Accounting function. Perform day-to-day accounting tasks, which include heavy spreadsheet work.
• Conduct monthly projections.
• Manage payroll reporting and maintain insurance eligibility reports.
• Maintain and prepare Excel spreadsheets for tracking and financial analysis.
• Enter and review transactions within the Sage accounting system.
• Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end processes as required.

Operational & Vendor Coordination

• Communicate and negotiate with third-party vendors, including IT providers, office equipment suppliers, and other service partners.
• Support operational efficiency through the timely resolution of vendor-related issues.
• Ensure smooth ongoing communication between accounting and cross-functional business partners.

Position Scope

This is not a review-only or oversight-only leadership role; it requires extensive hands-on involvement in daily accounting work. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical accounting ability with proven management experience, acting as both a contributor and leader.

Compensation

Salary range: $90,000-$125,000, depending on skills and experience. The salary flexibility may be considered for exceptional applicants.

Qualifications

• 5+ years' experience in hands-on accounting management.
• Experience working for the corporate office of a company with multiple retail locations is highly preferred.
• Experience with Sage software is a plus.
• Strong Excel skills are required.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.

Monday to Friday, 100% in-office
